When most people think about exercise, they often think about one goal: Weight loss.
While movement certainly supports a healthy weight, its benefits extend far beyond the number on the scale. Regular physical activity influences almost every system in the body, including one of our most important organs:
The brain.
At Remisi, movement is one of the pillars of our C.A.R.E.S. framework, known as RiseInMotion. We encourage movement not simply to improve fitness, but because it supports metabolic, cardiovascular and cognitive health.
Exercise stimulates the release of several beneficial molecules that help the brain adapt and function more efficiently. One of the best studied is brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), often described as a "fertiliser" for the brain because it supports:
- Learning
- Memory
- Neuroplasticity
- Growth and survival of nerve cells
Higher BDNF levels have been associated with better cognitive performance and may contribute to maintaining brain health as we age.
The brain is one of the body's most metabolically active organs. Conditions such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and hypertension have all been associated with an increased risk of cognitive decline later in life. Regular movement helps improve:
- Insulin sensitivity
- Blood glucose regulation
- Blood flow to the brain
- Cardiovascular health
Together, these adaptations support both metabolic and cognitive function.
Movement does not have to mean running a marathon or spending hours in the gym. Research consistently shows benefits from activities such as:
- Brisk walking
- Cycling
- Swimming
- Resistance training
- Dancing
- Gardening
The best form of exercise is often the one you enjoy enough to continue.
